Teen Dies from Blood Clot Caused by Contraceptive Pill

UK- A 19-year-old girl, Áine Rose Hurst, tragically passed away from a blood clot that developed after she had been taking the contraceptive pill. On March 11, Áine collapsed and was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital, where doctors discovered she had “severe brain swelling.” She died two days later.

Áine’s mother, Kerry Hurst, 52, recounted that Áine had gone out with friends on March 8 and complained of a headache the next morning. Believing it was just a hangover, Kerry advised her to take paracetamol and stay hydrated, but Áine’s headache worsened.

An inquest at Bolton Coroner’s Court on November 27 revealed that a rare complication from the contraceptive pill she had been using since 2020 was responsible for her death. The family expressed concerns over why Áine was allowed to continue the medication despite previous warnings about her elevated blood pressure.

According to a statement read by area coroner Peter Sigee, Áine had been prescribed the combined contraceptive pill, Femodette, but was advised to discontinue it after a routine check in December 2024 indicated high blood pressure. However, following a GP appointment in January, she was instructed to resume taking the pill.

Her family is “deeply concerned” that the GP did not consider her recent high blood pressure history and seeks clarification on what measures are in place to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Áine’s cause of death was determined to be cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, with the contraceptive pill identified as a “potential contributing factor.” -The Mirror.
