Tanzanian Football Match Suspended After Swarm of Bees Forces Players & Officials to Lie Down

Tanzanian Football Match Suspended After Swarm of Bees Forces Players & Officials to Lie Down – A pre-season football match between City FC Abuja and JKU FC was dramatically suspended after a swarm of bees descended onto the pitch, forcing players, match officials, and even camera operators to lie flat on the ground in a rare and chaotic interruption.

The match, held at Kwaraa Stadium in Babati, was poised at 1–1 in the 78th minute when the unusual incident occurred.

According to eyewitnesses and footage circulated widely on social media, both teams and the officiating crew quickly dropped to the ground in a coordinated attempt to avoid being stung.

Several substitutes sought refuge under the benches in the dugouts, while a cameraman covering the match also took cover on the turf.

The crowd of spectators, however, remained largely seated throughout the incident. It is unclear whether this was due to unawareness of the unfolding situation or a display of composure in the face of the unexpected disturbance.

No injuries were reported, and thankfully, no one is believed to have been stung during the brief invasion.

The cause of the bee swarm remains undetermined. Some have speculated that recent unusual weather patterns may have disrupted local bee activity, while others suggested that vibrations and noise from the match could have agitated a nearby hive.

Regardless of the cause, the moment produced surreal images that quickly went viral online.

Despite the delay, play eventually resumed. City FC Abuja went on to secure a late winner, delivering their own “sting in the tail” after the unexpected interruption.

Football fans around the world reacted with a mixture of amusement and astonishment.

One social media user remarked, “Nature doesn’t care about your football schedule. Smart move to lie down though—hope no one got hurt.” Another simply commented, “Just wow.”

While bee invasions during sports events are rare, this is not the first time such an incident has occurred.

In 2019, former Barcelona and Brazil star Dani Alves was stung by a wasp during a match for São Paulo.

More recently, tennis star Carlos Alcaraz was forced to flee the court during a match at Indian Wells after being stung during a bee invasion, which also led to a temporary suspension of play.
