A Bindura State University student narrowly escaped gang rape after the suspects discovered she was menstruating.
The case came to light in the Bindura regional magistrates’ court on Friday, where Iyeni Njanji and Taurai Chikwata faced charges of attempted rape and robbery. Both men received a 20-year prison sentence from Magistrate Elisha Singano.
Prosecutor Edward Katsvairo detailed the harrowing incident, which occurred in December. The suspects broke into a student residence in Bindura, ransacking the property and stealing various items, including cell phones, laptops, groceries, and cash.
Armed with a pistol and an iron bar, they forced two female students out of the house but left one juvenile behind, claiming she was too young.
While they initially intended to rape one of the students, the situation changed when they discovered she was on her menstrual period. Instead of proceeding with their plan, the suspects began to caress and kiss her.
The suspects were eventually apprehended after police tracked a cellphone they had sold in September. During the investigation, the victims were able to positively identify Njanji and Chikwata, leading to their conviction.
This incident has raised concerns about safety in student residences and the prevalence of violence against women.
The Bindura community continues to grapple with the implications of such crimes as they seek justice for the victims.
