Stranded or Scheming? Harare Woman’s Story Sparks Fierce Debate

HARARE – A mother from Mhondoro Ngezi was left stranded in Harare with her twin boys after being abandoned by her husband’s sister, who had promised to provide them with clothes and food.

With no family or resources to turn to, she spent a night at a police camp before seeking assistance.

However, as her story gained attention online, it sparked a heated debate—was she a victim of unfortunate circumstances or was she orchestrating a well-rehearsed scam?

Crime Watch Zimbabwe shared the story on Twitter, sparking widespread debate online. While some sympathized with the woman and praised a good Samaritan who lent her $9 for transport home, others suspected she was part of a deceptive scheme.

Several users claimed to have encountered her before, each recalling nearly identical distress stories used to solicit money.

The mixed reactions highlight growing concerns over fraudulent schemes targeting unsuspecting well-wishers.

@Ndarowa2 : “She has done this before. We gave her $15 when she claimed she had slept at Hatfield police station. Same story, same deception.”

@Johndoe, echoed similar concerns, stating, “There have been many like her, manipulating people with convincing sob stories.”

Others urged caution when dealing with such cases.

@Zvombo G1Z1 warned, “Be careful. People are using all sorts of tricks in town.”

Meanwhile, some directed their frustration toward the
woman’s in-laws. @tmmuchanyarei condemned her sister-in-law’s actions, stating, “That tete is heartless for abandoning her like that.”

The story continues to divide Zimbabweans, with some advocating for compassion while others remain skeptical of possible deception.
