State Targets HSTV in Twist to Blessed Mhlanga Case

The state has announced plans to prosecute Heart and Soul TV (HSTV), a subsidiary of Alpha Media Holdings, alongside jailed journalist Blessed Mhlanga, over allegations of inciting public violence.

This development emerged during court proceedings where Mhlanga, who has been in custody since February, challenged his continued detention before Magistrate Ruth Moyo.

His lawyer, Chris Mhike, told journalists that the state had shifted its position mid-hearing.

“The state had initially said it needed one more postponement to set a trial date.

“But now they’ve decided to bring charges against HSTV as well,” Mhike said.

“This means HSTV, which employs Mhlanga, will be a co-accused when the trial begins.”

NewZimbabwe reported that prosecutors intend to level charges against HSTV for publishing content related to a press conference by fugitive war veteran Blessed Geza.

The broadcast, allegedly facilitated by Mhlanga, called for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign and opposed efforts to extend his rule to 2030.

Mhike said the trial is now set for May 14, despite earlier concerns that Mhlanga’s preferred legal counsel would be out of the country on that date.

“They suddenly changed their position and said they are ready to proceed with trial on May 14,” Mhike said, adding that the state declined to adjust the date even after being notified of the scheduling conflict.

Mhlanga has been denied bail three times—twice at the magistrates’ court and once by the High Court.
