South African Woman Arrested for Possession of Human Placentas – A 39-year-old woman has been arrested in Lydenburg (Mashishing), Mpumalanga Province, after being found in possession of human tissues, suspected to be placentas.

The suspect, identified as Rose Mnisi, was taken into custody on Wednesday, 17 September 2025, and appeared in court the following day.

Mnisi, who is reportedly employed as a cleaner in the maternity ward at a local hospital, was allegedly trying to sell the human tissues when police received a tip-off.

According to reports, officers from the Lydenburg SAPS K9 Unit were conducting routine patrols when they were alerted to a woman attempting to find potential buyers for human body parts. It is believed the suspect was hitchhiking and headed towards Nelspruit.

Acting on the information, officers located a woman matching the description walking along Voortrekker Street in Mashishing carrying a plastic bag.

Upon being approached by police, the suspect was found with the suspected human tissues and allegedly admitted her role at the hospital.

The biological contents of the bag were confiscated and sent for forensic analysis.

Mnisi was subsequently charged with illegal possession of human tissues, and authorities have indicated that additional charges may follow as investigations continue.

Following her appearance at the Mashishing District Court on Thursday, 18 September 2025, Mnisi was remanded in custody. The case has been postponed to 25 September 2025 for further investigation and for her bail application.

South African police say they are treating the matter with the seriousness it deserves, given the ethical and criminal implications surrounding the handling and trafficking of human biological materials.
