Son Stabbed Mother to Death, Teeth Found Scattered at Scene

DURBAN – A 75-year-old grandmother was allegedly stabbed to death by her 35-year-old son at their home in the CC section of Umlazi, south of Durban, earlier this week.

The suspect allegedly attacked his mother with scissors during a violent altercation, stabbing her multiple times before switching to a knife when the scissors broke.

The victim’s body was found on the floor, with her teeth scattered around her.

According to neighbours and ward committee member Phumelele Malunga, the suspect had a history of physically abusing his mother.

“She lived in constant fear of her son’s temper. Gogo would often confide in me about the beatings she suffered at his hands,” said Malunga.

Malunga added that social workers had recommended that the victim be relocated to a safe environment due to the ongoing abuse. However, she was reluctant to leave her home and grandchildren behind.

The community is still reeling from the shock of the brutal crime.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed the community’s outrage. “He was dependent on his mother’s pension and would often lash out at her when he didn’t get what he wanted,” the resident said.

KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect had been charged with murder. “The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to appear before the Umlazi Magistrates Court soon,” Netshiunda said.
