“Society Pushed Me In”: Black Coffee Explains Why Fame, Pressure Ended His Marriage Plans

Grammy-winning South African DJ Black Coffee has declared that he will never marry again, revealing that his previous marriage was driven more by societal and family pressure than by personal conviction.
The internationally acclaimed artist, born Nkosinathi Maphumulo, opened up during a recent appearance on Podcast and Chill, where he reflected on the emotional toll of conforming to expectations after achieving fame.
“I will not get married again. I am clear about that because I am now in a better space in understanding who I am.
“I also understand the kind of pressure society puts you in without ever backing you up,” he explained.
Black Coffee recounted how his unconventional path to success — one that did not follow the traditional academic route was initially met with uncertainty by those around him.
However, once his music career took off, expectations from his family quickly escalated.
“With my career, especially because it was not so obvious, meaning I was not going to get a degree and become a lawyer.
“It was very unclear, but as soon as it popped, everyone was wowed.
“I bought my first house and car, and they [my parents] were like, ‘When are you getting a wife?’” he said.
According to tori_ng, the DJ admitted that he spent years trying to meet societal standards until he reached a point of clarity about his identity and what truly matters to him.
He emphasized that choosing to remain single is now a conscious decision that aligns with his personal growth and career focus.
Black Coffee was previously married to actress Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa.
The couple separated in 2019 following reports of infidelity involving a local model.
Their marriage produced two children, while the DJ has two other children from previous relationships.
Now a father of four, he believes he is no longer willing to conform to expectations that do not reflect his true self.
“Society kept influencing my life until I realised who I truly am. It is better for me to remain single for the sake of my career,” he noted.
