Snow Strands Motorists in SA: Two Dead from Hypothermia on N3

At least two people have died from hypothermia after being trapped in heavy snowfall on the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend. Some motorists were stranded in their cars for two nights due to the severe conditions.

KZN Acting Premier Thembeni Madlopha-Mthethwa confirmed that while many have been rescued, others remain trapped.

“All resources and teams have been dispatched to assist those stranded,” she stated, noting that the Municipal Parks Department is on standby to clear debris from affected roads.

The government is working with organizations like the Red Cross and Al Imdaad Foundation to provide food, water, and hot meals to stranded motorists. Provincial agencies, including SASSA, are assessing the needs of affected families and offering immediate relief.

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) are ready to deliver meals and evacuate individuals in hard-hit areas. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel.

N3 Toll Concession spokesperson Thania Dhoogra warned that the stretch between Tugela Plaza and Harrismith remains closed, with about 30 kilometers still needing clearance.

South African Weather Service forecaster Celeste Fourie indicated that no snow is expected this week, but cold conditions will persist.

Isolated thunderstorms may occur in parts of KZN and the Free State, while a cold front is set to bring light rain to the Western Cape later in the week.
