Skydiver Takes Her Own Life by Jumping 15,500 Feet From Plane Just Hours After Breaking Up with Boyfriend

An inquest has found that Jade Damarell, a 32-year-old skydiver, took her own life after falling 15,500 feet in County Durham, United Kingdom. The tragic incident occurred just hours after she broke up with her boyfriend.

Jade died instantly upon hitting the ground at Wrefords’ Farm in Peterlee after failing to deploy her parachute. Coroner Dr. Leslie Hamilton confirmed her death was a suicide. Her club, Sky-High Skydiving, stated that the incident seemed to be “a deliberate act,” and there was no sign of negligence on their part.

The inquest revealed that Jade ended her eight-month relationship with Ben Goodfellow the night before her death. Notes addressed to her family were found, written around 2:30 AM.

On the morning of April 27, Bryn Chaffe, co-owner of Sky-High Skydiving, saw Jade having breakfast before her jump. Chaffe noted that she seemed quiet, which was not unusual for her.

Jade had more than 500 jumps under her belt and did not attempt to activate her parachute or backup system. She had also turned off her automatic activation device, which normally deploys the parachute at a specific altitude.

A report from British Skydiving confirmed that all of her equipment was functioning properly. The day before her death, she had completed six jumps without any issues.

The cause of death was determined to be blunt trauma from multiple severe injuries, including a fractured skull. Durham Constabulary stated that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, Tori News reports.

Following the inquest, Jade’s family paid tribute to her, expressing gratitude to the skydiving community for their support. They said: “Jade loved the sport with a passion, and it brought her so much joy. Sky-High handled the tragedy and investigation into Jade’s death professionally and with compassion… our beloved daughter Jade was a brilliant, beautiful, brave and truly extraordinary person.”

They emphasized the importance of speaking openly about mental health issues, hoping to create a culture of kindness and support for those in distress. “We miss Jade beyond words, but Jade’s love, brilliance, courage, and light will live on in our family and among all those who knew and loved her.”
