Six-figure divorce payout: Johannesburg tycoon ordered to pay $5 040 monthly in landmark ruling

A Pretoria High Court has made a landmark ruling in a divorce case, ordering a prominent Johannesburg businessman and political activist to pay a substantial monthly maintenance fee of $5 040 (R88 300) to his ex-wife until she remarries.

The ruling also requires him to vacate the family’s opulent $741 000 (R13 million) mansion in Fourways.

The court’s decision follows a lengthy and disputed legal battle over the couple’s estate. The judgment, delivered on November 29, prioritizes the well-being of the couple’s three children and protects their privacy by withholding their parents’ identities.

Furthermore, the husband had initially proposed selling the Fourways property and dividing the proceeds, but the court rejected this plan in favour of a more stable arrangement for the children. The ruling ensures the children will remain in the family home with their mother.

In addition to the monthly spousal maintenance, the husband is obligated to provide $920 (R16 100) per month for each of their three sons. The wife will also receive an annual payment of $720 (R12 600) for the children’s extracurricular activities.

The judgment requires the husband to fully disclose his financial holdings, including the value of his estate, assets and liabilities, to ensure transparency and fairness in the divorce settlement.

The husband will be entitled to spend four hours with his children on Tuesdays and weekends, provided the parties coordinate properly, as part of a parenting plan that ensures regular contact between the children and their father.
