Simon Mazorodze Road to Undergo Rehabilitation: Govt

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has announced the closure of Simon Mazorodze Road from Harare Drive to Willowvale Road/St George Street, effective March 27 until further notice.

The closure is part of an extensive road rehabilitation and upgrade project contracted to Tensor Systems.

In a public notice, the ministry outlined the temporary traffic adjustments to facilitate construction work while ensuring the smooth flow of vehicles and pedestrians.

“All pedestrians and the motoring public who use the affected road are advised as follows: northbound (city-bound) traffic may use Watts Road (the service road adjacent to Simon Mazorodze) by exiting Simon Mazorodze at the Chinzou roundabout and joining the service lane,” the notice read.

The notice also highlighted that traffic will shifted back into Simon Mazorodze Road after the construction zone. Alternatively, city-bound motorists can turn left onto Harare Drive, then right onto Willowvale Road, or continue to Highfield Road.

Southbound (Masvingo-bound) traffic will continue using the existing southbound carriageway. During this period, Watts Road will operate as a one-way street.

As construction progresses, adjustments will be made.

“Construction of the southbound (Masvingo-bound) Tensor Systems carriageway will require northbound traffic to continue using Watts Road, which will remain a one-way street as described above. Southbound (Masvingo-bound) traffic will later be moved to the completed northbound carriageway.”

The ministry also provided alternative routes for southbound traffic.

“Motorists may turn left into Daniel Street, then immediately right into Mbirimi Drive, left into St George’s Street, right into Waterfalls Avenue, then rejoin Simon Mazorodze Road.”

Motorists have been urged to adhere to traffic signs, allow extra travel time, and cooperate with traffic controllers stationed at the site.

“Other diversion routes will be advised as they are prepared. Additional detours will be introduced to facilitate bridge construction. While road users are free to select alternative routes, the ministry will only be responsible for the designated ones,” the statement added.

The public is urged to strictly follow traffic signs and give way to all construction vehicles, including those branded under Tensor Systems, to ensure safety throughout the project.
