Shurugwi man kills Grandmother over witchcraft allegations
Takudzwa Mugariri from Marozva village under Chief Banga, Shurugwi, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for striking his 94-year-old grandmother with a wooden log several times, accusing her of bewitching him and his siblings.
The accused (27) appeared before the High Court sitting in Gweru yesterday facing charges of murder.
According to the State’s case, on February 3, 2024, the accused person proceeded to the now-deceased’s homestead where he accused her of placing a curse on him and his siblings indicating that she was responsible for their suffering, misfortune and poverty.
The court heard that the accused person burned the now-deceased’s clothes and traditional medicines before striking her on the head, face, buttocks and back several times with a wooden log leading to her death.
A police report was made, leading to the accused person’s arrest and he was subsequently sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment.
