Scam Alert! ZRP Dismisses False Message on Online Fine Payments

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned motorists about a fraudulent message circulating on social media, falsely instructing drivers to pay traffic fines online.
Authorities have confirmed the message is a scam, urging the public not to fall victim to the deception.
In an official statement, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi dismissed the notice, clarifying that the police have not introduced online payments for traffic violations.
“The fake message falsely claims that unpaid fines must be settled online to avoid late fees and penalties.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has not issued any such directive and motorists should ignore it,” he said.
The fraudulent notice, which has been widely shared, falsely cites a fine of 101,100 USD for an alleged violation under the Road Traffic Act.
The scam message reads: “Reminder: Unpaid traffic ticket -= 174920433665 for CR2025 issued on 2025/06/06 under Road Traffic Act, Fine: 101100 USD, Due by 2025/06/20. Settle now to avoid late fees and penalties.”
Nyathi reiterated that all fines must still be paid in person at designated police stations.
“Traffic violation fines are currently being paid at prescribed police stations, as stated in previous ZRP press statements and official communication platforms.
“We urge members of the public to be cautious and not fall victim to this scam,” he emphasised.
According to iHarare, ZRP officials have launched an investigation to track down those responsible for spreading the scam.
Nyathi assured the public that any future changes to payment methods would be formally announced via official ZRP communication channels.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police will make formal announcements on online traffic fine payments if they are introduced in the future.
“Investigations are underway to bring those behind this fraudulent message to justice,” he stated.
