SALLY MUGABE Central Hospital in Harare has retained its position as the leading maternal health facility in Zimbabwe, recording more than 22,000 births last year—the highest total of any single institution in the country.
Speaking during the official handover of hospital beds donated by Delta Beverages today, the hospital’s chief medical officer, Dr Hopewell Mungani, said the maternity unit remains the busiest section of the facility.
“Sally Mugabe is one of the biggest hospitals in the country; it’s reflected in the statistics we come up with,” Dr Mungani said.
“Our busiest unit is the maternity hospital, where last year we delivered around 22,000 babies.
The second highest was Parirenyatwa, probably around 15,000—so there’s a big difference.”
He added that the hospital currently has a total capacity of more than 1,400 beds and is made up of four specialised units.
The Delta Beverages donation comes at a time when the Government continues to urge greater private sector involvement in the health sector.
Dr Mungani thanked the donor and encouraged further partnerships to help modernise the hospital and improve service delivery.
