Sacrifice Recognised: Government Scales Up Support for War Veterans, Their Families

The welfare and economic empowerment of liberation war veterans and their dependents is being significantly enhanced by Government, with new funding and programmes rolled out to honour their sacrifices and improve their livelihoods.
Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube announced the expanded support during the recent Zanu PF National People’s Conference.
He revealed that the Government is currently paying school fees for 6,395 children of eligible veterans—4,886 enrolled in primary and secondary schools, and 1,509 attending tertiary institutions.
“Government currently pays education fees for 6,395 eligible veterans’ children,” said Prof Ncube.
In the health sector, 4,010 veterans are receiving medical aid, giving them access to essential healthcare services.
The Government is also continuing the exhumation and dignified reburial of fallen freedom fighters.
“In line with Resolution 127 of the 21st ZANU PF National People’s Conference, 357 shallow remains have been identified, with 112 freedom fighters exhumed and 70 reburied,” Prof Ncube said.
To reinforce economic empowerment, President Emmerson Mnangagwa launched a US$6 million veterans’ empowerment scheme on 6 June 2025.
The package includes US$3.5 million for war veterans and US$500,000 for other categories such as ex-political prisoners, detainees, restrictees, non-combatant cadres, war collaborators, and dependents of national heroes.
Prof Ncube also confirmed the transfer of assets from Power Zimbabwe to the Veterans Investments Holding Company (VIHC), which is now operational with a chief executive officer and management team in place.
VIHC is preparing to cultivate 100 hectares during the upcoming summer farming season, marking a major step in agricultural empowerment for the veterans’ community.
According to The Herald, Matetsi Unit 4 Hunting Concession in Matabeleland South—under the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs has deposited US$100,000 to VIHC, with another US$100,000 expected by 31 December 2025.
These contributions are expected to boost the company’s capacity to deliver on its mandate.
Under the Heifer Pass-On Programme, 50 heifers have already been distributed to veterans in Matabeleland South, Matabeleland North, and Midlands.
An additional 157 cattle are earmarked for rollout in other provinces, expanding the reach of the livestock initiative.
Alongside this, veterans are also benefiting from housing schemes, residential stands, and vending stall allocations designed to support sustainable livelihoods.
These initiatives reflect Government’s continued commitment to ensuring that those who fought for the country’s independence are not only remembered, but empowered to live with dignity and opportunity.
