SA Worker Airlifted from Zim After Medical System Failure

A South African worker who fell critically ill while on assignment in Bulawayo, had to be airlifted back home after failing to receive adequate medical care.

The patient was flown out from Beitbridge Border Post to Limpopo, where he was received by Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba and MEC for Health Ms Dieketseng Mashego.

According to Newzimbabwe, officials from the Limpopo Provincial Government confirmed the evacuation on Monday, citing “logistical reasons” for the failure of treatment in Zimbabwe.

“Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba and MEC for the Limpopo Department of Health, Ms Dieketseng Mashego, received the South African patient who was airlifted from Beitbridge on the border of Limpopo and Zimbabwe,” said the Office of the Premier.

“The patient could not receive complete medical treatment due to logistical reasons when he fell ill in Bulawayo where he was on work purpose.”

The incident has once again spotlighted the dire state of Zimbabwe’s public health sector, which continues to reel under the weight of chronic underfunding, shortages of basic drugs, outdated equipment, and a mass exodus of healthcare workers.

The country’s healthcare system, once one of Africa’s most respected, has been in steady decline for over two decades.

Years of economic collapse, political instability, and widespread corruption have left hospitals and clinics struggling to deliver even basic services.
