Rwanda Launches Africa’s First Self-Flying Electric Air Taxi

Rwanda Launches Africa’s First Self-Flying Electric Air Taxi – Rwanda has officially launched Africa’s first public flight of a self-flying electric air taxi, marking a major milestone in the continent’s aviation history.

The announcement was made Wednesday, following a partnership between the Rwandan government and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, the initiative positions Rwanda as a leading hub for advanced aviation technology in Africa.

The project aims to revolutionize urban transport by introducing sustainable, traffic-reducing solutions that connect communities through cutting-edge air mobility.

“Rwanda is actively building a future where our cities are more connected and our economy is more dynamic through innovative transport solutions,” said Infrastructure Minister Jimmy Gasore.

He added that the collaboration lays the groundwork for integrating new technologies and expertise into Rwanda’s transportation ecosystem.

The highlight of the initiative is the EHang EH216-S, a pilotless electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, which will be demonstrated at the Aviation Africa Summit taking place Thursday and Friday in Kigali.

This will mark the first public demonstration of a self-flying air taxi in Africa, serving as a live case study for aviation stakeholders and regulators from across the continent.

CRBC’s Rwanda Director General, Huang Qilin, said the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to delivering innovative solutions to Africa.

“Leveraging our global network and engineering strength, we look forward to working with Rwanda to explore the potential of the low-altitude economy and create new models for innovative development across the continent,” he said.

Officials say the initiative is designed to attract further investment and global technology partners to Rwanda’s emerging air mobility sector.

It also builds on the country’s successful track record with drone-based logistics, making Rwanda a pioneer in Africa’s move toward futuristic, sustainable transport.

EHang, a global leader in urban air mobility technology, is working alongside CRBC to expand its presence in international markets through this partnership.
