Rhema Bible Church Founder Ray McCauley Passes Away at 75

Ray McCauley, the founder of the Rhema Bible Church, has died at the age of 75. His family confirmed in a statement that he passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones.

McCauley established Rhema Bible Church in 1979, which grew to become one of South Africa’s most influential religious institutions.

The church gained significant attention during Jacob Zuma’s presidency, particularly when McCauley founded the National Interfaith Leadership Council. This group was often referred to as Zuma’s “God Squad” due to its close connections with the former president.

At the time of his passing, McCauley had stepped down from his leadership role in the church due to health issues.

In 2022, he handed over the position of senior pastor to his son, Pastor Joshua McCauley. McCauley also served as the President of the International Federation of Christian Churches.

Before dedicating himself to ministry, the U.S.-trained pastor was a champion bodybuilder, having earned titles such as Mr. South Africa and finishing in the top three at the Mr. Universe competition. He was also an author, sharing his insights and experiences with a broader audience.

McCauley’s contributions to the Christian community and his influence in South Africa will be remembered by many as the nation mourns the loss of a significant religious leader.
