Rampaging Lion That Stalked Marange Villagers Taken Down

MARANGE– The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has successfully removed a stray lion that had been terrorizing the Mutsago area of Marange, bringing relief to the affected community.
The lion, suspected to have wandered from Save Conservancy, had killed four cattle over the past three weeks, prompting swift action from wildlife authorities.
ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the operation, acknowledging the difficulty of tracking the predator due to its nocturnal movements.
“After days of distress in the community, we successfully neutralized the animal. We are grateful for the support from residents, local authorities, and stakeholders in resolving the matter,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mutare and Buhera districts continue to grapple with another wildlife threat as stray buffaloes from Save Valley Conservancy roam into nearby villages, endangering residents.
Six people, including a schoolchild, have been injured in separate attacks.
One buffalo was killed in Marange. Three victims were injured in an attack near Dune Primary School in Buhera South.
Meanwhile, another three, including a schoolchild, were injured in Mutsago under Chief Marange.
The ongoing issue stems from a vandalized double fence that separates the conservancy from local communities.
Farmers have reportedly taken advantage of the damaged barrier, herding their cattle into the conservancy in search of pasture, worsening the human-wildlife conflict.
The problem has persisted for nearly a decade, with no resolution in sight, as blame shifts between conservancy owners and villagers.
According to a Manica Post report, Farawo urged residents to refrain from hunting the stray buffaloes and to allow wildlife rangers to handle the situation professionally.
He also advised residents to avoid walking at night in affected areas to minimize risk.
ZimParks remains committed to working alongside local authorities and communities to address wildlife concerns and ensure the safety of residents.
