Radio Oncology Centre and Training Hub Set to Launch at Chinhoyi Hospital

Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital will undergo a major transformation aimed at repositioning it as a premier medical training institution starting next year, according to Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora.

The announcement followed an unannounced visit to the hospital on , 4 August 2025, where he outlined comprehensive plans to upgrade the facility’s infrastructure and equipment in preparation for student training.

The revamp forms part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise Zimbabwe’s healthcare sector, particularly at provincial level.

“This is a hospital that we have targeted for upgrading in terms of equipment because it’s going to be training medical students from next year.

“In that respect, this entails that all departments must be functioning very well, and this is being supported by our deliberate move for modernising our institution through installing modern equipment,” Dr Mombeshora said.

In addition to the training hub upgrade, the minister also confirmed that Chinhoyi Hospital will house a new radio oncology centre—boosting access to cancer treatment in the province.

He noted that construction of the centre is set to begin soon, with the sugar tax revenue allocated to fully fund the initiative.

“The advantage is that space is there, which places us at an advantage. By next year, this centre should be up and running,” he said.

The government’s commitment extends beyond Chinhoyi, as Gweru and Victoria Hospital in Manicaland Province have also been earmarked for similar transformation.

According to the ZBC, these upgrades align with ongoing national efforts to improve provincial health care facilities to support specialist care and hands-on training for medical students.

Authorities view this investment as vital in decentralising health services and building a resilient health care workforce.
