Protecting Minds, Preventing Tragedies
A devastating incident in Gokwe has shaken Zimbabwe, highlighting the crucial role of family support in mental health care. A – 25-year-old mentally challenged man allegedly slit a one-year-old toddler’s throat with a knife, sparking concerns about the neglect of mentally challenged individuals.
In an exclusive interview with AfroGazette News, Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko emphasized the importance of family support.
“Relatives must step up to support mentally challenged loved ones by taking responsibility for their well-being. This includes taking them to mental health institutions and ensuring adherence to prescribed medication. Leaving them unattended is a recipe for disaster, as seen in Gokwe.”
Inspector Mahoko warned that neglecting mentally challenged individuals can have dire consequences. “Untreated mental illness can lead to violent outbursts, crime, and social isolation. Relatives who abandon mentally challenged persons, leaving them without support or medication, will continue to cause further heartbreaks due to the instability of their mind.”
Regarding legal accountability, Inspector Mahoko explained that,” In Zimbabwe, when Individuals with mental health challenges are suspected of committing serious crimes, the law prioritizes both justice and compassion. The. Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act (Chapter 9:07) outlines a clear procedure that mandates immediate assessment and treatment at a mental health institution for mentally challenged individuals.
He added that “This approach ensures that individuals receive the necessary care while also being held accountable for their actions.”
