Prisoner Dies After Escaping Police Van & Struck by Train – A prisoner being transported to court in the United Kingdom died after allegedly escaping from a custody transport vehicle before being struck by a train near .

According to , the man, believed to be in his 40s, was being conveyed to court by a contracted transport service when the vehicle stopped along the hard shoulder of the A1(M) shortly after 9am on Thursday.

Authorities said an altercation reportedly occurred inside the custody van, leaving two security personnel injured before the detainee managed to flee.

Police immediately launched a large-scale search operation involving multiple emergency services and coordination with the .

Approximately 40 minutes later, officers responded to reports of a casualty on railway tracks near Welwyn North station, where the escaped prisoner was found dead after allegedly being struck by a train.

A police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 9am today, a man aged in his 40s who was being conveyed to court by a transport contractor escaped from the vehicle. An area search followed, with multiple resources deployed.”

Authorities added that formal identification had not yet been completed, although the deceased man’s family had been informed.

The two injured custody officers were taken to hospital for treatment following the incident.

The matter has since been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which routinely investigates incidents involving detainees and custody-related deaths.

Meanwhile, train services including Thameslink and LNER experienced significant delays as investigations and recovery operations continued.
