Prince William arrived in Cape Town today, marking his first visit to South Africa since 2010, for a four-day trip focused on his Earthshot Prize, which supports breakthrough environmental projects.
The British heir will attend a global wildlife summit, meet with President Cyril Ramaphosa, and lead the Earthshot Prize ceremony on Wednesday, where five winners will each receive £1 million ($1.3 million) to advance climate and environmental initiatives.
Launched by William in 2020, the Earthshot Prize draws inspiration from U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s “moonshot” initiative, aiming to accelerate solutions for pressing climate issues.
“By week’s end, I hope Earthshot will have spotlighted innovators driving change in their communities, attracted investors for scaling African solutions, and inspired Africa’s youth committed to the environment,” William said before his arrival.
His wife, Kate, remained in the UK as she recovers from a course of preventative cancer chemotherapy.
