President Mnangagwa Mourns Sydney Gata
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Sydney Zikuzo Gata, the Executive Chairman of ZESA Holdings, who passed away on Thursday, 3 July 2025, after a short illness.
In a condolence message, President Mnangagwa described Gata as a dedicated engineer and educationist who played a significant role in Zimbabwe’s energy sector.
“I am deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Dr. Sydney Zikuzo Gata, the Executive Chairman of ZESA Holdings and husband to our Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Hon. Angeline Gata, who passed on at a local hospital yesterday after a short illness,” said President Mnangagwa.
The President highlighted Gata’s contributions, including major energy projects like Hwange Power Station expansions and the rehabilitation of Kariba Hydropower Station, which strengthened the national grid.

He noted that Gata also played important roles in international energy bodies and advised regional and global institutions on energy issues.
“On behalf of the nation, the Revolutionary Party ZANU PF, Government, my family and myself, I wish to express deepest condolences to the Gata family, most especially to Mai Gata and the children during this period of profound grief,” President Mnangagwa said.
Gata is remembered for his commitment to advancing energy solutions and infrastructure development in Zimbabwe and beyond.
