“Pfacha Pfacha! Tsikidzi Dzapindira MuKwekwe”—Panic as Blood-Sucking Pests Take Over

KWEKWE – A wave of panic has gripped Kwekwe residents following a surge in bed bug infestations across several suburbs, with authorities confirming that the outbreak is spreading rapidly.
The infestation, first reported in Amaveni and Mbizo, has now infiltrated homes, schools and public spaces, leaving many residents distressed.
Affected families describe the situation as unbearable, with the blood-sucking pests invading furniture and even public transport.
“We are living in unbearable conditions. These insects are everywhere, making it nearly impossible to sleep,” said Mbizo 11 resident Margaret Dube.
Kwekwe City Council officials have admitted the severity of the crisis, confirming that containment efforts are underway but remain challenging.
“The infestation is spreading fast, particularly in Amaveni and Mbizo. We are working on fumigation strategies, but the scale of the outbreak is concerning,” said a council official.
The crisis mirrors an ongoing bed bug infestation in Harare’s Mbare suburb, where authorities have struggled to curb the problem due to limited resources and poor waste management.
According to Zimeye, health experts warn that if left unchecked, the outbreak could extend to surrounding areas, requiring urgent intervention.
Recent reports indicate that bed bug infestations are becoming a nationwide concern, with cities like Mutare, Bulawayo, and Gweru also on high alert.
Experts emphasize that overcrowding, poor sanitation and the trade of second-hand clothing contribute to the spread of these pests.
Authorities urge residents to cooperate in fumigation efforts, stressing that a combined approach involving chemical treatments and community action will be essential in addressing the growing crisis.
