Outrage as Inter Africa Demands 4 O-Levels for Bus Conductor Job

Outrage as Inter Africa Demands 4 O-Levels for Bus Conductor Job – A recent job advertisement by Inter Africa Bus Services has sparked heated debate across Zimbabwean social media platforms, after the company listed four O-Level passes as a minimum qualification for aspiring bus conductors.

The post, which quickly went viral, drew mixed reactions — with many Zimbabweans questioning the logic behind prioritizing academic qualifications for such a role amid soaring unemployment and deeper systemic transport issues.

Public Slams Qualifications Requirement Amid Broader Transport Woes

Critics were quick to highlight that academic achievements don’t necessarily translate into safer roads. Many argued that the focus should instead be on addressing the culture of recklessness, corruption at road checkpoints, and lack of enforcement.

One user, @TinoZimConnect, wrote:

“You can have 10 distinctions but if the system is broken, it’s all in vain. Road safety needs a cultural and structural reset, not certificates.”

Another, @MaiVeeVoices, added:

“London bus drivers aren’t asked for a string of certificates. The real issue is our dysfunctional traffic enforcement and lack of driver discipline.”

@NdabaStreetTalks chimed in:

“We treat O-Levels like gold coins. Some of our best entrepreneurs barely finished school, yet they lead massive teams. Priorities, please.”

Even humor found its place in the debate. @ManZhakata joked:

“At this rate, next year you’ll need a diploma to open bus doors.”

@Sarudzai_Mufaro sarcastically asked:

“How exactly does knowing Pythagoras help stop an accident? Just wondering.”

Doctor Praises the Move for Professionalism in Transport

However, not everyone disagreed. Prominent medical doctor, Dr Misheck Ruwende, supported Inter Africa’s move, saying that educated staff could contribute to safer travel by applying rational thinking and discipline.

He posted:

Well done Inter Africa.

A step in right direction towards curbing road traffic accidents in Zimbabwe. 4 O levels – conductor, I’m assuming it will be > 5 Os for the driver. Its about rational thinking. Those with our lives in their hands must have some level of education. pic.twitter.com/pNjjfkASNj

Dr Misheck Ruwende went on to say that the transport sector needs more structure and intelligence, especially when lives are at stake.
