‘Our husbands don’t touch us at night’ – Nigerian Women Protest Lack of Intimacy Due to Heat Discomfort – Nigerian women at Rivers state took to the streets on February 6 to demonstrate outside the office of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED).

The protestors were highlighting their inability to have intimate relations with their husbands due to the heat caused by a lack of power. Carrying placards with slogans such as “No Light, No Payment” and “The Heat is too much,” the women lamented the impact of power outages on their daily lives.

Without access to cooling systems, their houses and businesses become intolerably hot, leading to spoiled foodstuffs and loss of income. Additionally, the women complained that their husbands were reluctant to touch them at night due to the heat, leading to marital issues.

The protest shines a spotlight on the ongoing issue of power supply in the region, where frequent outages have become commonplace, disrupting daily life in numerous ways. The demonstration represents an attempt to voice the discontent and dismay felt by many residents who have been left in the dark, figuratively and literally, by poor power infrastructure.

According to Maria Ike, the spokesperson for the group of protesting women,

“We have decided to let the world know what we are passing through in the hands of PHED. The poor supply in our area is at zero level despite the fact that we pay monthly bills to PHED. We no longer have romance and conjugal relationship with our husbands because of so much heat due to power failure. Our businesses have collapsed because of power outage. This is really affecting our families”
