Nyathi Family’s Return Home Sparks Debate on ‘Relocation’ vs Reality

The return of Gilbert Nyamanhindi and Joyce Manyara, known as the Nyathi Family, to Zimbabwe has triggered debate on social media.

The couple, who had been living in South Africa, announced they are leaving their rented apartment and moving back home to start over.

Their story has raised wider questions about life in the Diaspora, especially the growing cost of living and unemployment in South Africa.

In their post, they described the move as a “relocation,” a term that divided opinion online.

Some people criticised the wording, while others defended the family, saying going back home is not a failure but a chance to rebuild.

“Going back home is not defeat. Sometimes it’s the only way to rebuild,” one user said.

Others say the story reflects a hidden struggle many people face abroad, beyond the usual success stories shared online.

Analyst Rutendo Moyo urged people to show understanding instead of judgment.

“People feel pressure to appear successful. Calling it relocation may help them keep dignity and hope,” she said.

The Nyathi Family says their focus is simple — survival and starting again.

“We are starting small, but we are together. That’s what matters.”
