‘No More Random Roadblocks’—ZRP

By Loyd Matare

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it is committed to ensuring that roadblocks are deployed in a professional, transparent, and regulated manner, following formal schedules and strict supervision.

This comes as motorists across the country voiced frustrations over what they described as excessive and sometimes unsanctioned roadblocks, particularly along major highways and urban routes.

In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the ZRP Command had “taken note of the public’s concerns regarding the sighting and manning of police roadblocks,” emphasizing that all operations were guided by formal schedules and strict supervision.

“All police roadblock schedules are submitted by Station, District, and Provincial Police Commanders to the Police General Headquarters’ Operations Department for guidance and clearance,” said Nyathi.

“The policy of the Zimbabwe Republic Police is that no roadblocks are manned within a 30-to-50-kilometre radius of each policing area, whether in urban or rural setups.”

He also warned officers who deviate from established procedures, saying disciplinary action would be taken against any member found conducting illegal or corrupt operations.

“Let me make it clear, any police officer who conducts roadblock duties outside the set standards will face disciplinary action,” he said.

“We are determined to maintain professionalism and integrity within the force.

“Members of the public should take note that police roadblocks are heightened or increased during public order situations, national events, or special operations such as reacting to an immediate incident or scene involving moving criminals or stolen property.

“Once the situation normalises, deployments revert to the ideal scenario,” he added.

Motorists are encouraged to report unusual or suspicious roadblocks via the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197.
