No Change, No Mercy: Woman Jailed for Breaking Debtor’s Finger Over $6

A 25-year-old woman from Forester J Farm in Mvurwi has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for a brutal assault over a $6 debt.

On the evening of March 1, 2025, what started as a routine debt collection turned violent when the 49-year-old complainant visited the offender’s residence to retrieve her money.

The debtor attempted to settle the amount with a US$50 note, demanding immediate change. When the complainant explained she had no change at the time, tempers flared.

In a fit of rage, the younger woman physically attacked the complainant, twisting her right-hand ring finger with such force that it fractured.

Appearing before the Guruve Magistrate’s Court, the offender was convicted of assault and sentenced to 24 months in prison, with six months suspended—leaving her to serve 18 months behind bars.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe condemned the act, stating: “We urge citizens to resolve disputes peacefully and seek mediation rather than resorting to violence.”
