NRZ Launches Harare–Mutare Rail Leisure Train Service at USD60 Per Trip

NRZ Launches Harare–Mutare Rail Leisure Train Service at USD60 Per Trip — The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry (MoTHI) and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA), has launched a dedicated Rail Leisure train service operating between Harare and Mutare.
The initiative coincides with the 18th edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo.
Operating under the theme “Devolving Sustainable Tourism Development—Our Future,” the service is designed to enhance domestic and international tourism through immersive rail experiences.
The refurbished coaches, currently undergoing final enhancements at NRZ’s Bulawayo mechanical workshops, are set to accommodate up to 243 passengers.
The Harare–Mutare railway line has also undergone full rehabilitation to ensure a comfortable journey and to highlight the scenic beauty of Zimbabwe’s natural landscapes.
The inaugural journey will depart Harare on 5 September at 0700 hours, followed by additional departures on 7 and 9 September.
Return trips from Mutare are scheduled for 6 and 8 September, also departing at 0700 hours. An overnight return service from Mutare to Harare is planned for 12 September, departing at 2000 hours.
No services will operate on 10 and 11 September to allow for scheduled excursions within Mutare.

NRZ officials have emphasized that the Rail Leisure service offers a unique combination of comfort, affordability, and scenic travel, aimed at enhancing the overall experience of both local and international attendees of the tourism expo. Passengers can expect onboard entertainment and refreshments throughout the journey.
Fares have been set at USD $60 per one-way trip, which NRZ has described as a cost-effective option intended to encourage wider participation. While this service is specifically aligned with the tourism expo, NRZ has indicated its interest in exploring similar initiatives in the future.
This new offering is part of broader efforts to promote tourism development in Zimbabwe by integrating transportation and cultural engagement, allowing visitors to explore the country’s diverse attractions through rail travel.
