Nightmare in Thailand as Giant Lizard Devours Abandoned Newborn

THAILAND – Residents of Thailand’s Samut Prakan province were left horrified when a monitor lizard was discovered eating the remains of an abandoned newborn, triggering a police investigation into the tragic incident.

The unsettling discovery was made in Bang Phli district, about 40km from Bangkok, where locals spotted the reptile, approximately 6.5 feet long, consuming the upper body of the infant near a water source next to rental housing largely occupied by migrant workers.

Alarmed, they contacted authorities, who dispatched rescue personnel from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation.

Upon arrival, rescue workers could only retrieve the newborn’s head, as the lower half and any clothing were missing.

The remains have been sent to the Chakri Naruebodindra Medical Institute to determine whether the baby had been stillborn or alive before being abandoned.

According to Bangkok Post, officials believe the baby was left shortly after birth before being discovered by the monitor lizard.

These reptiles are commonly found in Thailand’s urban areas, inhabiting canals, swamps, sewers and ponds.

They typically feed on fish, snakes and food scraps, though they can become aggressive when threatened, delivering mildly venomous bites.

Witnesses were deeply shaken by the gruesome sight.

Kittisak Phongphipat, one of the first responders, initially thought he had found a fish washed ashore. “Then I looked closer. It was a baby. I felt sick to my stomach because the baby had been torn to pieces by the animal,” he recounted.

Authorities are now working to locate the mother, who may face legal action if investigations confirm the newborn was alive when abandoned.
