Nigerian Police Clarify Viral Schoolgirl Cann@bis Video Originated in Zimbabwe, Not Nigeria – The Nigerian Police Force has issued a formal clarification regarding a viral video depicting a school-aged girl smoking what appears to be cannabis, while being encouraged by fellow pupils.
Contrary to initial reports that the footage was recorded in Nigeria, the country’s authorities have confirmed the incident actually took place in Zimbabwe.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Muyiwa Adejobi, the Nigerian police urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified and misleading content on social media platforms.
“The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to a disturbing video circulating widely on WhatsApp and other platforms, showing a schoolgirl smoking a substance believed to be cannabis. The video has generated concern among Nigerian parents and the broader public,” said ACP Adejobi.
Preliminary investigations by Nigerian authorities revealed that the language used in the video was not Nigerian.
Instead, it featured both English and Shona, the latter being predominantly spoken in Zimbabwe. No Nigerian languages or accents were identified.

ACP Adejobi emphasized the importance of responsible information sharing, especially in cases involving minors or sensitive content.
“The Force strongly encourages responsible dissemination of information and thorough verification of sources before amplifying potentially damaging content,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has also acknowledged the viral video and confirmed that investigations are underway.
However allegations are that the student in question may be linked to Johannesburg Secondary School in South Africa.
Despite this, ZRP has since appealed to the public for any information that may assist in identifying the individuals involved.
“The ZRP is investigating a video showing a girl in school uniform smoking what appears to be dagga during a birthday celebration, with other students singing in the background. Anyone with useful information is urged to report to the nearest police station,” the police said in a statement shared via their official X (formerly Twitter) account.
