Nigerian Man Jailed for Storing 50 Bags of Human Faeces Outside Home

A man in northern Nigeria has been sentenced to two weeks in prison and fined 100,000 naira ($74) after storing dozens of bags of human faeces outside his home, causing a foul smell that neighbours said made life unbearable.

Mohammed Saidu, a septic tank cleaner from Kano, was taken to court after residents reported the stench to environmental authorities. Neighbours said they had repeatedly asked him to remove the waste, but he ignored their complaints.

The court heard that Saidu had stored nearly 50 bags of human waste, which he allegedly planned to sell to farmers for use as fertiliser.

Magistrate Halima Wali, who personally visited the property before delivering her ruling, described his actions as a threat to public health. She ordered him to spend 14 days in prison, pay a fine, and remove all the waste from the premises.

Residents welcomed the decision, saying the neighbourhood is now free from the unbearable smell.
