Nigerian Court Releases 119 Protesters

A Nigerian court freed 119 protesters, including minors, on Tuesday after authorities dropped severe charges—including treason and inciting a military coup—stemming from August protests over economic hardships.

The release follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive on Monday to drop all charges against detained minors.

Initially facing charges with penalties as severe as the death sentence, the protesters had been arraigned in two groups.

Their attorney, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the case was “struck out” and all 119 detainees were released, adding, “We now seek rehabilitation and compensation from their state governments.” Nigerian Court Releases 119 Protesters

The attorney general fast-tracked the case, initially set for January, by intervening to have the charges withdrawn.
