Neighborhood watch member freed suspects for $10 bribe

HURUNGWE – A 56-year-old neighbourhood watch member from Urayayi Village was convicted of obstructing justice after releasing two accused thieves in exchange for bribes, sentenced to 3 months in prison.

Stephen Chivafa appeared at Hurungwe Magistrates Court on obstructing justice charges.

The State alleges that on May 11, 2024 at around 0000 hours, the accused person freed two suspects held on theft charges at ZRP Kapfunde Post, after demanding a bribe of $10 from each.

The accused person’s actions in releasing the suspects and demanding bribes constituted unlawful conduct.
