Mutongi Arrested Over Kuwadzana Tragedy That Claimed Three Children

Harare — Social media personality Josephine Mutongi has been arrested in connection with the Kuwadzana Extension tragedy, where three children were found dead inside the trunk of a parked vehicle.
The incident, which stunned the nation, has ignited public outrage and sparked debate over the conduct of social media personalities during moments of national grief.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest, stating:
“We have arrested Josephine Mutongi in relation to the Kuwadzana Extension incident.”
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of her involvement.
Mutongi became a prominent figure in the aftermath of the tragedy after she organised a public march, encouraging participants to wear white in solidarity with the grieving families.
However, her actions soon drew backlash following allegations that she collected cash donations at the funeral without the families’ consent.
According to H-Metro, Mutongi later posted a video on social media claiming she was handing over the funds she had received.
The move intensified criticism, with many accusing her of exploiting the tragedy for personal attention.
She has since issued a public apology for her conduct.
The arrest has reignited debate around the role of social media influencers in sensitive public matters, particularly during periods of national mourning.
Police have indicated that further details will be released as investigations progress.
