Mum abandons infant in blair toilet
TSHLOTSHO – A 34-year-old woman from Tshlotsho received a 10-month prison sentence for dumping her newborn baby girl in a pit toilet after delivering the child in the same facility.
The accused appeared before Tshlotsho Magistrates Court, charged with contravening Section 106(1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23 that is concealing the birth of a child.
According to court records, on October 4, 2024, around 0400 hours, the accused gave birth to a baby girl.
After giving birth in a blair toilet, the accused threw the baby’s body into the pit.
The matter came to light after an eyewitness entered the toilet to relieve herself and discovered the accused suffering from severe bleeding.
The accused revealed the matter to the witness that she had concealed her pregnancy since March 2024.
The baby’s body was retrieved from the toilet pit and a post-mortem examination revealed death was due to severe prematurity.
Following arrest, the accused appeared in court and was sentenced to 10 months in prison.
