Mt Darwin Woman Dies After Falling Into Hidden Pit While Relieving Herself

A 45-year-old woman from Mt Darwin tragically died after falling headfirst into a concealed five-metre-deep pit while relieving herself in a bushy area — turning a quiet moment into a fatal accident that has shocked the Mutungagore community.
Dorica Kanyama had been walking with her husband through a bushy area when she briefly stepped aside to relieve herself.
As she moved away from the path, the ground beneath her gave way, causing her to fall into a hidden pit covered by thick grass and foliage.
Mashonaland Central deputy police spokesperson Lucy Chigwenhese confirmed the incident, which occurred on October 23, stating,
“She screamed, prompting her husband to rush to the scene, where he found her in the pit. Villagers helped retrieve her, but she was bleeding from the head and died upon arrival at Mt Darwin Hospital.”
According to Bulawayo 24, police have urged members of the public to exercise caution when walking in bushy or unfamiliar areas and to remain alert to hidden hazards.
Authorities say such concealed dangers pose serious risks, especially in rural environments where open pits and unmarked terrain are common.
The tragedy has sparked concern among local residents, with calls for increased awareness and safety measures in areas prone to such hazards.
Police continue to emphasize the importance of community vigilance to prevent similar accidents.
