MPs Demand Crackdown on Machete Sales Amid Escalating Violence

Bulawayo legislators are pushing for tighter controls on machete sales and possession, citing a surge in violent attacks linked to armed gangs.

The issue was raised in Parliament as lawmakers pressed the government to take urgent action against the growing security threat.

During a parliamentary session, Emakhandeni-Luveve MP Descent Bajila questioned Justice, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi on the government’s stance regarding machete ownership.

“What considerations come into play for that kind of proclamation to come from the minister?” Bajila asked, emphasising the need for decisive intervention.

Bulawayo North MP Minenhle Gumede echoed the concerns, calling for stricter legislation to curb machete sales and usage, particularly in areas affected by rising violence.

Gumede urged immediate action, warning that unchecked access to dangerous weapons is fuelling deadly attacks.

Responding to the concerns, Minister Ziyambi defended current laws, stating that while machetes and knives remain legal, restrictions can be enforced in specific areas if necessary for security reasons.

“Even an axe can be dangerous. It is the behaviour or circumstances in a particular district that would require the commanding officer to invoke relevant laws to maintain law and order,” Ziyambi noted.

Despite existing regulations, machete-related violence continues to strike fear across Bulawayo. Reports show numerous victims hospitalised with severe wounds, including deep cuts to the head, legs, and hands, following brutal gang assaults.

Ziyambi added, urging public cooperation in tackling rising crime. “We have good laws, but it is our behaviour that must change to ensure peace and order in the districts we command”.

With mounting pressure from lawmakers and terrified residents, the government faces an ultimatum—take decisive action to curb machete sales or risk losing control over the escalating violence.

The city of Bulawayo stands at a crossroads, demanding swift intervention before more blood is spilt.
