Mother Pushes Son on Swing for 44 Hours, Leading to His Death
In a tragic incident, a severely ill mother pushed her son on a swing for 44 hours straight, resulting in his heartbreaking death. Romechia Simms, 24, struggled with schizophrenia, which drove her to this extreme behavior.
Her son, Ji’Aire Donnell Lee, was found lifeless after succumbing to dehydration and hypothermia.
Police discovered that Ji’Aire was alive when he was first placed on the swing two days before his death. Authorities were alerted by a bystander in La Plata Park, South Maryland, in 2015.
Investigations by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Simms had been pushing Ji’Aire since they entered the park at around 11:15 AM on May 2.
Temperatures dropped to 50°F overnight, contributing to the tragic outcome. An autopsy confirmed that Ji’Aire died from dehydration and hypothermia, and his death was ruled a homicide, the Mirror reports.
Vontasha Simms, Romechia’s family member, shared a photo of Ji’Aire on Facebook and announced plans to establish a charity in his memory.
She aims to raise awareness about the urgent needs of individuals with mental illness.
“There is a need that must be filled,” she wrote. “We must support those suffering from mental health issues, as it touches every family in this country.”
In 2016, Romechia Simms was not sentenced to jail but was required to take medication and undergo psychiatric treatment as part of a court agreement.
She faced charges of involuntary manslaughter, first-degree child abuse, and child neglect resulting in death.
A forensic psychologist informed the court that Simms was diagnosed with schizophrenia, which affected her criminal liability in the case.
Prosecutors accepted an Alford plea, allowing her to maintain her innocence while acknowledging sufficient evidence for a conviction.
