Mother Arrested After Fatal Stabbing of Three-Year-Old Son

A three-year-old boy was killed in Hobhouse yesterday morning after his mother allegedly stabbed him multiple times during a violent outburst, police have confirmed.

Manicaland police arrested Netsai Chikuni (39), who is accused of fatally attacking her son, Ngonidzashe Njerera, with kitchen knives, leaving him with deep wounds to the head and neck.

Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, the acting provincial police spokesperson, said:

“The accused appeared to be in a state of frenzy during the attack. The motive remains unknown and investigations are ongoing.”

Witnesses said the violence began after Chikuni arrived at her brother Admire Chilamwita’s house and became aggressive upon finding tenants staying there.

They said she forced her way inside and could not be restrained.

The Herald also reported that tenants described her behaviour as uncontrollable before the attack.

According to police, after preparing supper, Chikuni began banging on a tenant’s bedroom door around 1am.

Tenants told officers they heard her shouting at the child, with Shava, one of the tenants, confirming:

“We heard her saying, ‘Idya chingwa ukuda kundiurayisa,’ and assaulting the child. We were afraid to come out.”

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said the boy’s cries stopped after about two hours, and neighbours were alerted around 4am.

When police arrived, they found the child in a pool of blood and Chikuni lying beside him with self-inflicted wounds on her legs and hands.

“Another tenant peeped through the door and saw the child on the floor,” Chinyoka said.

“Two bloodstained kitchen knives were recovered at the scene. Chikuni was arrested and taken into police custody.”

A tenant who witnessed the ordeal said the community is traumatised.

“She looked confused and possessed. We tried to stop her, but she was too violent. We have never seen anything like this,” the tenant said.

Chikuni remains in custody while homicide detectives pursue further investigations.
