Mom Jailed for Brutal Attack on Daughter’s Friend

A 33-year-old woman from New Magwegwe, Bulawayo, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for viciously assaulting her daughter’s friend.
Panashe Mpofu appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Vakayi Douglas Chikwekwe and pleaded guilty to one count of assault. She received a 24-month sentence, with six months suspended on condition she avoids reoffending for the next five years, leaving her to serve an effective 18 months.
Magistrate Chikwekwe condemned the rising tide of assaults in Bulawayo, stating:
“Not a day goes by without at least five assault cases being reported, some leaving victims with permanent disabilities.”
The court heard that Mpofu’s victim, Monalisa Ncube, is a minor who suffered severe injuries after being attacked with a blunt object. The injuries have kept her out of school and burdened her family with medical bills.
The incident unfolded on November 8, 2024, in Old Luveve suburb. Mpofu, upset to see her daughter walking with Monalisa and two other friends, confronted the group. She then assaulted Monalisa repeatedly with a blunt object, causing significant harm.
The matter was reported to the police, and Monalisa was taken to the hospital for treatment.
