A young trainee nun from Rongo Catholic Church, 23-year-old Yvonne Jirangwa, was found dead on Sunday, October 27, after disappearing from the parish three days earlier. Missing trainee nun found dead in sewer pit.
Her body was discovered floating in a sewer pit within the convent grounds by a fellow nun who had been heading to the farm.
Homa Bay Diocese’s Vicar General, Father Gabriel Atieno, shared that the convent’s sisters had immediately reported her missing to Rongo police after failing to locate her on October 24.
The tragic discovery has left the local church and community in shock, as Yvonne had spent three years actively involved in parish life and community service.
Rongo Sub-County Police Commander Salim Fundi confirmed the incident, noting that the church had alerted authorities as soon as Yvonne disappeared.
Police are now investigating the cause of her death in close cooperation with church officials.
Yvonne’s body has been moved to Rosewood Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy will provide further insights into her untimely passing.
