Mimosa’s Livestock Program Breeds Success, Eyes Commercialization

ZVISHAVANE – Mimosa, a leading PGMs producer, has revolutionized Zimbabwe’s livestock industry with its pioneering revitalization program, achieving remarkable success and poised for commercialization.
Launched in the Midlands province, the program has achieved remarkable success, with Mimosa, in partnership with the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society and the Department of Livestock, distributing 600 bulls and 177 heifers to communities, significantly enhancing the genetic quality of local cattle herds.
Key statistics demonstrate the program’s success: 746 cows were inseminated between 2020 and 2023, resulting in a 59% success rate and the birth of 450 calves. To date, over 2,000 calves have been born through the breeding bulls and artificial insemination programs.
For local farmers like Mrs. Sithembile Ncube, the program has been a game-changer. “The new bulls have improved the quality of our cattle and we are now getting better prices for our livestock,” she said.
This success is a testament to the program’s impact on local communities.
Mimosa’s Managing Director, Fungai Makoni, emphasized the program’s focus on sustainability and community empowerment. “By taking our livestock revitalization program to a commercial level, we aim to improve cattle quality and uplift communities, creating opportunities for farmers to sustain their livelihoods and contribute to the local economy.”
As the program enters its next phase, Mimosa is investing in market linkages and value addition opportunities for livestock products.
This will enable farmers to generate income from their herds, transforming livestock farming into a viable commercial enterprise.
