Milton High School Proposes Name Change To Bulawayo High School

Milton High School Proposes Name Change To Bulawayo High School – Milton High School has formally proposed changing its name to Bulawayo High School, arguing that the institution’s identity is now more closely associated with the city than with colonial administrator Sir William Milton, after whom the school was named in 1910.

The proposed rebranding comes as Zimbabwe intensifies efforts to remove colonial-era names from public institutions under the government’s heritage-based education policy. If approved, the move would mark one of the most significant symbolic changes within Bulawayo’s education sector in recent years.

The proposal is also expected to generate debate among former students, alumni and education stakeholders, many of whom have strong historical ties to the school’s longstanding identity.

The development follows the government’s recently announced plans to rename several schools across Harare as part of a broader initiative aimed at replacing colonial-era names with those of liberation war heroes and indigenous figures.

Under the proposed changes, Prince Edward High School would reportedly be renamed Murenga Boys, while Queen Elizabeth School would become Sally Mugabe. Lord Malvern High School is also expected to be renamed Waterfalls High.

In total, the government proposal seeks to rename 20 secondary schools and more than 40 primary schools across Harare in what authorities describe as an effort to align the country’s education system with Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage and post-independence identity.

The proposed changes have already sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting the removal of colonial-era symbols while others argue that certain school names carry historical and academic significance that transcends their colonial origins.
