Midlands Police Seek Community Help Amid Spike in Murder Cases

Police in Midlands Province have reached out to traditional leaders and churches amid a spike in murder cases, with approximately three people killed in the province every week.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko says while the High Court handed down tough sentences last year, the trend of violence has barely shifted.

“The increase in murder cases is concerning and this issue cannot rest solely with the police,” said Insp Mahoko.

“Community leaders, including chiefs, church leaders and elders must engage to foster dialogue and understanding among residents.”

Most of the killings, he noted, stem from petty disputes, arguments that could be de-escalated through community mediation rather than ending in bloodshed.

“We encourage the public to report any suspicious individuals as soon as they become aware of them especially those known to be bullies or wanted persons,” he said.

“Cooperation with our patrol officers and engagement during operations is crucial.”

According to the Herald, recent weeks saw four separate murders in Mberengwa, Gokwe, Silobela and Zhombe, with nearly 10 arrests linked to these incidents.

Meanwhile, police believe a growing number of these crimes involve ex-convicts who quickly return to criminal activity after serving time.
