MCAZ Orders Urgent Recall of Captopril Tablets Over Quality Concerns

The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has issued an urgent Class II recall of Torrent Captopril 25mg Tablets, batch number B520K001, citing safety concerns after the drug failed to meet critical quality standards.

The recall affects all retail-level stock of the batch manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd, India.

The move comes after an Out-Of-Specification (OOS) result was recorded for Captopril disulfide, a key chemical component crucial for the drug’s effectiveness.

According to MCAZ, failure to comply with quality specifications could lead to a loss of efficacy and pose serious risks to patient safety.

“All pharmacies, wholesalers, hospitals, and clinics both public and private must immediately quarantine and halt the distribution of the affected batch,” said MCAZ Director-General Richard Rukwata in a statement.

“We urge all members of the public who may have purchased this medicine to return it to the point of purchase or report to MCAZ offices.”

He added: “This recall is a proactive step to protect public health. MCAZ will not compromise on the safety, quality, and efficacy of medicines available in Zimbabwe.”

MCAZ confirmed it is working in coordination with Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd and its local distributors to ensure the swift removal of the defective batch from the market.

This recall highlights the Authority’s ongoing commitment to regulatory vigilance in the pharmaceutical sector.
