Residents of Mbare’s Matererini and Matapi Flats are facing yet another wave of bedbug infestation, barely a year after a similar outbreak swept through the high-density blocks, leaving dozens of families battling sleepless nights and skin irritation.
Last year’s incident saw the Harare City Council conduct fumigation exercises across several blocks, but residents say the problem has resurfaced this time more aggressive and spreading faster than before.
The latest outbreak has triggered panic, frustration and growing anger among tenants who say the insects, commonly known as tsikidzi, have overrun bedding, clothing and furniture.
“We are no longer sleeping. Every night we wake up scratching,” said one resident, adding that some families are now discarding mattresses in despair as the pests continue multiplying.

Another resident said the situation has worsened in recent weeks, raising fears that the infestation could spread beyond the apartment blocks if left unchecked.
“We now live in constant discomfort and anxiety.
“Our kids are living in fear we can’t even afford to stay in our homes anymore,” he said.
Residents accuse the Harare City Council of failing to respond urgently to the growing crisis.
“Council came to fumigate last year but right now the situation has become worse.
“Mushonga yavo inenge yekunyepa nekuti izvezvi zvatova worse,” said Mai Simba.
